How does water treatment plant purify waste water?

Who does not know the how much importance water has in our life? Water, the other name of life, is found in plenty in the world. But only few per cent of the water is suitable for drinking. In fact, today there is a scarcity of drinking water. To purify water and suitable for drinking, water treatment plant is very much necessary.

Used water which comes out of industries can be purified and again made it fit for drinking. Water treatment plants make it possible.

Some of the facts about the water treatment plant are as follows:

1. Water treatment is about the removal of the undesirable materials, chemicals as well as the other contaminants which make the water unhygienic.

2. The very first step is pumping the waste water in the water treatment plants. As far as the physical infrastructure is concerned they should be made of the appropriate material. Otherwise the plant will not be able to store the water and there will be leakage.

3. The next step includes screening. Debris such as trash, leaves, stones and sticks are removed from the water.

4. After screening comes the step of pre-conditioning and pre-chlorination. In the pre-chlorination process chlorine, which is known for its purifying property, is added to the water. However, one of the main problems of adding chlorine is that the taste of the water becomes really bad.

5. After all these processes are followed, pH adjustment of the water is done. The water is also filtered here.

After following the above steps, the water is finally purified and made suitable for drinking.

How Is Advance Waste Water Treatment System More Effective?

Water is the basic requirement of our life. There are several resources of water but water from all resources is not fit for drinking. It needs to be purified as it contains several germs and chemicals which are harmful for us.

Inatallation of ARFC MachineThere are conventional systems and advance waste water treatment system by which a water treatment plant treats water. There is one major difference between both the types.

Advance waste water treatment system treats wastewater further before releasing it into the soil. This water treatment process uses methods that are conducive to providing advanced treatment consistently.

Advanced treatment system is basically like a train. The system consists of a series of logical processes that treat water to a certain level. However, the system needs maintenance to work properly.

There are two stages in which advance waste water treatment plants function:

  • Primary treatment
  • Pre-treatment or Advanced Treatment.

Primary treatment- During the primary treatment, the water treatment plant separates solids, oils, fats and greases. This is a quite significant water treatment process.

In this process the contaminants which are not easily removed from water are separated.  Since these solids are removed at the primary stage, they don’t clog up the system in the latter stages of water treatment process.

Why Do Environmentalists Stress So Much On Water Treatment Plants?

Disposal of sewage water is a major problem in developing countries. On one hand, industrialization is opening new doors of modernization and also providing jobs. On the other hand, this industrialization is making the environment too much polluted.

Lack of adequate sanitation in large areas leads to spread of disease causing bacteria and virus into other sources of water. Apart from this, pharmaceutical and chemical products are also not disposed off in a proper manner. All these increase the chemical load of sewage water. Oil spillages, dumping waste products into oceans and river water, etc. largely contribute to the contamination of water. Some of these pollutants such as aluminium, plastic and Styrofoam take really long time to degrade.

Water treatment process is very important as it makes the water re-useable. Water treatment plants carry out several processes to treat contaminated water to make it fit for industrial and domestic consumption.
Water undergoes a pre-treatment process as well. It includes:

Screening
Storage
Pre-conditioning
Pre-chlorination

After pre-treatment, the water is further treated in the water treatment plant.

pH Adjustment- pH level of neutral water is 7. pH adjustment is done to neutralize too much acidic or alkaline nature of water.

Flocculation- used to remove turbidity from water

Sedimentation- the floc that precipitates from the water during the flocculation process is separated.

Filtration- final stage of removal of dirt from water.

Removal of Chemical Impurities and Ions- hazardous chemicals such as lead, arsenic and nitrite are removed

Disinfection- Chemicals like chlorine are added the water to kill disease causing virus and bacteria.

Water softening plant softens hard water and makes it fit for domestic and commercial purposes. Hard water does not cause any disease but it is not fit for using as well. For example, if you wash your clothes in hard water, lather will not be much.  Hence, hard water should be passed through various processes in a water softening plant.

What Is The Significance Of Water Softening Plant?

Hard water is not suitable for domestic and in several cases, even for industrial purposes as well. Hence, it should be softened. But what is hard water and soft water?  Hard water is water that has high mineral content. With more magnesium and calcium dissolved in itWater Treatment Process, the degree of hardness increases. Hard water is not suitable for domestic usage.

Cooking in hard water takes longer time. When used with hard water, soaps and shampoos lather very little. Hard water causes more residual deposits which are harmful for washing machines, heaters, showers and several other home appliances. The life term of the appliances reduces by forty five per cent.

Hence hard water needs to be softened. Water softening plants soften hard water by removing magnesium, calcium and several metals present in hard water. Softening of water is done by ion exchange process.

For making water suitable for drinking, water should be treated. In water treatment plants, water undergoes various water treatment processes before it becomes perfect for drinking. Water treatment process can be classified into three major stages. In the first stage, larger solids are removed from water.
In the second stage, finer solid pieces, organic and inorganic materials and microorganisms are removed from water. pH balance is also adjusted in this stage. In the final stage, the pathogens which are left even after the first two stages are killed by adding disinfectant.
